electronic digital lock

PROS

– Easy access with fob/fingerprint/WIFI/PIN/key override. There is less chance of being locked out with multiple ways to open the lock.
– Change codes/access yourself. The ability to change the codes yourself can be ideal in instances where accessibility needs to be changed regularly. No more locksmith callout fees when you need to lock out undesirables.
– Stylish modern finish. Digital locks are known for their sleek and contemporary designs. A new black or silver digital lock can change the way a door looks with a 21st century finish.
– Monitor access/access control. Some clients need to know who is entering and when. High end digital locks allow you to keep track of which PIN/fob/print has opened the lock and at what time.
– No keys required. Big bunches of keys are cumbersome and annoying – especially when you have a different key for each door. Minimising or removing keys entirely can be a game changer.
– Fobs/levers Digital locks can be easier to use than keys for those suffering from a disability. We have had great success helping people with disabilties regain their independence with using a fob and lever combo.
– Remote access with WIFI/bridge. Being able to unlock the door for a family member or friend can be life changing in some instances. A huge attraction with high end digital locks is remotely setting user codes for one-time access/deliveries.

CONS

– Exposure to weather . The digital keypads will misbehave when they reach 60 degrees Celsius. 15 minutes in direct sun can cause issues with functionality. Rain and moisture will also affect an electronic digital lock if it is not suitably rated for it’s environment.
– Deadlocking function. Most digital locks are NOT classified as deadlocks (only a few have a keyhole on the inside of the door). This can affect insurance an security. However, digital locks can be coupled with a deadlock to comply with insurance/bolster security.
– Serviceability. Most digital locks are not repairable if issues arise with the electronics. After the 12-month warranty, the lock will need to be replaced in the instance of an electronic failure. Alignment between latch/bolt and the frame can burn out the electronics and void any warranty.
– More responsibility for the owner. Users need to be relatively tech savvy to operate the app and/or change settings on digital locks. Batteries go flat, each lock has a different method to bypass this. You will need to store this info for when the time comes. Drilling and replacing a digital lock is an extremely expensive exercise.
